I hate writing out maps by hand. Does anyone know of an app or Word configurement that helps with that?

Apps for Cartography

There's a free mapping program not really an app, as it's for computers than tablets and so on called AutoRealm. I've played with it a bit, but I've never been good at getting it to give me the degree of control I want over the outcome.

Some people I know like it, though. There's also if you like spending money profantasy's Campaign Cartographer, which is very powerful and elaborate, but has a steep learning curve and might be overkill for simply making maps for one's novels definitely aimed more at people who want to create maps for games.

I've also heard of people doing things like scanning drawn maps and using programs like photoshop or GIMP to fix them up. Stories: Test of Truth - Rule of She. One caveat. There appears to be no "save" function, so do what you have to do what you want, and save it by screen print if you want the result of your work.

Now, I tried to use Inkarnate, but was unable to do, um, anything. It comes up, but I can't edit the blank map-surface in any way. Am I doing something wrong? At first the process seems to be a bit daunting and time-consuming, but there is a large number of good instructional videos and articles on the web.

Many of them take you through the map-making process on a step-by-step basis. As a start, it's useful to have a sketch, or outline of your map, done with something like Paint, or Paint. You can then import that into Gimp as a layer and then Trace your outlines from it onto a second layer.

Once that's done you can delete the first. One word of warning - you have to have quite a steady hand with the mouse to draw in GIMP, especially with parts of the outline that form a complete shape, such as a continent, or island. If the finishing point doesn't join up properly with the starting point, filling with textures and colours etc doesn't work.

Unfortunately, no-one knows what they are. Somerset Maugham. I think you have to sign up for the beta, which I did a while back, but nothing came of it.So how does the software fair up against the competition? Inkarnate is a software for those who need a quick map on-the-fly. But for those as obsessive as I am, your sleep schedule will die regardless.

In theory, however, it accomplishes that goal rather well. One of the two authored this Reddit post, which talks about their struggles in finding a sufficiently decent map editor online leading them to develop their own program. The video featured in the post is a very early version of Inkarnate, a program which is having new features and improvements added to it on almost a monthly basis.

Small to medium-sized maps, usually portraying cities, small villages, or ancient temples. Here are a few examples from some people who are really, really good at the software, to give you some idea of what Inkarnate maps might look like…. Inkarnate caters to a very specific group of people. Most of its tools excel as they allow you to make a very good map in a very, VERY short amount of time.

And this is a good niche, but there are other options for those who want to dive deeper into the art of cartography. The issue is that one of those options, a free software called GIMP, offers a much higher skill ceiling than does Inkarnate. So the premium kind of falls flat. In the spectrum of levels-of-commitment with free and paid cartography tools, Premium Inkarnate sadly fails to compete with other options on the market. In summary? Sign in. Log into your account. Hello everyone, I have been using the both loved and hated Inkarnate software for a while to make my maps, but recently I felt like it doesnt cut it for me anymore, so I am slowly trying to develop my own workflow and style in photoshop - one possibly similar to Inkarnate, because I quite like the style, but also one unique to myself I am putting all of the textures here for the grabs - they are all seamless AND they are all a recolor of the same base template, so they blend, more or less, perfectly into each other in case you would deside to transition from one to the other.

Last edited by Elvanos; at PM. Reason: Updated with a lot of new stuff. Inkarnate Textures I really liked these, especially the lava oriented one. My problem with Inkarnate is how few tiles there are. There's not even a lava tile in the objects tiles. How do you go about making your own tiles for Inkarnate? I loved the ones you did. I've heard of Torstan add on, but I can't find it. Well, I find an adequate background texture, then I find a 'pattern' texture to go on top of it generally useing multiply or some light type blending an then I apply some kind of colo modifier on it - I mostly use HSL adjustment in photoshop.

Thanks for sharing! I'm going to check these out when I get home later. Tags for this Thread freelandtexture. All times are GMT The time now is PM. They orient players and their characters to a shared, imagined space. Maps bring the fantasy world much nearer to our own. By giving a sense of scale and direction, they are indispensable tools at the table. When first building your own world for Dungeons and Dragons, it makes sense to know what it looks like.

Ursula K LeGuin took this approach when writing the beloved Earthsea books, first creating the massive map of the island-covered world and then filling in the story. David Mitchell also advocates for starting with the map when creating a storyworld. I mentioned in How to Increase Engagement that the very first map I drew of our homebrew Dungeons and Dragons world was drawn in a composition notebook. I had dreamed up a little starting region with a few—admittedly stereotypical—locations and laid them out.

As it expanded and became rich with lore and personality, I needed a better tool to convey not only the geography, but the impression of the world. Inkarnate is a web-based cartography toolset designed with users of all ability levels in mind.

There are two options for purchasing the pro version. We jumped on the Inkarnate train a couple years ago. The expanded access to more assets and increased level of detail afforded by the larger size made Pro a clear choice for me.
